Giving and Receiving
by Jaggi Vasudev

[Listen to Audio! New!]

Giving and receiving is the basis of all transactions. No interaction can take place without these two. Nowadays, we are constantly trying to elevate one to a place of sanctity and the other to subordination. One is considered superior and the other inferior. Today, we feel we must emphasize the importance of giving only because taking happens in large volumes and giving has become scarce.

In reality, however, there is no giving or taking. With a little deeper perception of life, one can see that there is no such thing as giving and taking. It is just life rearranging itself constantly. Modern science agrees with this today. There is no giving and taking, no adding or subtracting, just a rearrangement of the same energy. If you see everything as yours, you just rearrange as necessary.

When you realize that the essential process of life is a constant transaction, you will realize that for an iota of offering that you make, there are a trillion things to receive all the time. Think of the forces of existence and the zillions of creatures working, knowingly or unknowingly, within your body and outside of it, to make life possible. Everything in the existence is somehow collaborating to keep you alive and well. Only a fool thinks of himself as a giver. Just to be alive is to receive in great abundance.

It’s been over two years since I was in the presence of Sadhguru, when he came to Bellevue and addressed a crowd of over 1500. He saw so clearly. He laughed and told stories with a simple effervescence and when I laughed at one point, he looked right at me and I felt spiritually whitewashed in that moment. He took my breath away and filled me with light and joy and the feeling dancing in me was childlike and simple bliss.

Will I ever see him again? Do I need to? His presence is felt whenever I recall the exchange that day in March. And that is exquisite.

Here is hoping you all were loved deeply today by a beloved in your life.

Powerful Affirmations: Chasing the Blues Away

Mandala for prosperity and well-being

So figuratively speaking “over my head”, the cloud of discontent or distraction is five days and counting. Ever have a week like this? Where the mood is blue, black, gray before you can invoke the indigo and green and rose back into your mood cloud?

Today I am opting to try an intentional exercise called I AM.

On Sunday, the Reverend Susie Schadle, invoked the power of I AM explaining it this way:As three of her two favorite words and three favorite letters. As many times as I have heard this next bit, I never tire of the reminder. So listen up or read on and join me in a mood improving moment by way of a simple exercise that takes as little as three seconds.

I is for Intention

A is for Attention

M is for Manifestation

Imagine you are speaking to yourself or another and you say…

I am an idiot. (Wait, what are you calling in based on the above formula?)

Let’s rethink this strategy, this choice, this choice of language, feeling, mood.

I am a radiant writer. Oohh what might that cause to show up?

How about this…

I AM resilience in action and have a can do attitude.

I can feel myself getting lighter already.

Care to try a few for your own well-being?

Powerful Affirmations can be expressed as simple “I AM” statements that bolster the visions we have for ourselves in the now and for the future. The power of positive thinking is simply a necessary ingredient on a daily basis. Feeling blue? Make it indigo or violet with an infusion of bright red loving energies, or healing green with an introduction of sunny yellow thoughts.

We will always benefit from invoking affirmations in the shadowy moments much like we need sleep, nourishment, water, a certain amount of salt in our diet, human touch and affection.

Take this in as much as you can and practice the I AM as you need it.

I AM powerful.

I AM creative.

I AM now smiling.

Daily Positive Affirmations: A Short Guide to A Happy Life

A Short Guide to a Happy Life by Anna Quinlan

A Short Guide to a Happy Life by Anna Quinlan

“I show up. I listen. I laugh.” –Anna Quinlan

I first discovered A Short Guide to a Happy Life by Anna Quinlan in a Half Price Bookstore near my home, at least seven years ago. It is a slender book and a quick read that has been keeping me company for years.

It’s one of those books that I buy for myself then give away to a friend who needs it. So I buy another and again, I give it away.

Meanwhile, I read and read again this humble and poignant manifesto that is peppered with elegant understated and perfect black and white photography.

“A picture is worth a thousand words.” So true in this case for each image suggests even more than the text it sits beside.

I relate very much to journalist, essayist, and novelist, Anna Quinlan, because of a pivotal event in her life at 19 that informed and transformed her. It utterly altered how she chose to live. It was an event that showed her what really mattered.

Her mother died of Ovarian cancer. That time of supporting her mother in her final months marked a turning point in her fresh young life and forever changed her attitudes about college, family, work, all of it.

She got crystal clear on what mattered most and how life is precious time. Are you? I believe I am. At 14, I tragically lost my own mother and it forever altered my sense of how precious life is and to this day I am more likely to tell you how much I care too often, rather than too little. Positive Affirmations for myself and others, for me are a mainstay in relating to people.

Through beautiful and descriptive simple language infused with her gentle, generous and compassionate spirit as the writer and human being she is, she conveys simple wisdom. She offers wise counsel as she shares a piece of her personal history and the deep and life long insights it gave her.

At one point I was determined to order a case of these books and give them to everyone I cared for…I’ll start with giving away one copy.

Living a fully engaged life is not always easy, but it is worth it.

Exhaust the little moment. Soon it dies.

And be it gash or gold it will not come

Again in this identical disguise.

Positive Daily Affirmations Guest Blogger Tony Anders: Scared Yet?

A note from Deborah:

Affirmations and Fear in the same sentence? What could I possibly be thinking? Tony Anders is one of those people that gets that ALL that we experience is golden; though it may not seem so in the thick of crisis and recovery from it.  Meeting Tony as I did, it was quickly clear that I was meeting him for more than a singular reason. Manifesting what we want sometimes shows up in forms we could not have imagined. A fan of collaborating and enrolling others in the power of using affirmations daily, I told Tony about Positive Daily Affirmations, he told me about his memoir in essay form, Artisan of the Human Spirit, and I knew I wanted to share him here in this forum.

We are afforded many opportunities to make new supportive friends. We are afforded daily opportunities to contribute to consciousness from the first conversation we have with another (or ourselves). Whom will you invite in today? Whom will you be a light for as you are also a light to yourself? Imagine it is Simple. And so IT is.

Scared Yet?

I guess I am ready to be scared. It is kind of a rush actually. Normalcy and complacency have run their course and it is time for transition. I think it is healthy to be a little scared from time-to-time. As much as certainty nourishes us, so do we grow from the unforeseen. Do I really want to know what is around every corner? I think not.

Being scared has an exhilaration that starts the heart. It works our emotional muscles. It shakes us and rocks us off the comfy spots on our couches. It is like our first roller coaster ride where upon rising to the click-clack of the cart moving upward, we know we are either going to throw up or throw our arms up and squeal like a child wanting to go again.

Life hands us challenges. Usually neutral in how they are served, but we can often victimize ourselves by how we label things. We can perceive that things are insurmountable, disrupting, and unfair. Through this fear we become scared. Scared is still okay. We have often been scared, but we often forget what lies on the other side of transcending fear: skill, strength, understanding, leadership, and sometimes peace to name a few.

Remember how long the street looked when you first teetered on two wheels? Remember how long the hallways looked when you first entered school? Did you forget your locker combination? How about the two words that changed your life forever: “I do!” Were you certain of your abilities as a spouse? How about parenting? How did you feel as you stared at the backside of a backpack walking away from you for the first time as your child entered school? Ever lost a job? Gone broke? Overcome illness, addiction, loss?

Still here? Still standing? Wiser? Stronger?

Sure there are enough things out there that are “horrifying”: war, famine, and a multitude of things that we humans need to get a wrangle on. However it is funny that the horrifying things often test our resolve in other ways and are often not as perpetually disrupting to our day-to-day existence. At least I hope not.

I want to be scared. I want to feel again what it is like to grow, to overcome, and feel strong. It is how I feel on the other side of scared that makes me feel empowered, connected, and alive!

Are you scared of anything now? Can you envision how you would feel on the other side of it? What will you gain? Can you use it to the greater good of those around you? It is also comforting to know we have all been there.

Like a child who is afraid of the dark, it is often our opinion of what lies ahead and not the reality which is our greatest adversary. I will try to keep my opinions under wraps so the battles diminish and my will grows exponentially.

To life’s little “Boogey Men” out there I say “bring it on!” “You’re not so tough!”Just please leave the light in the hallway on for me until I fall asleep okay?

Positive Daily Affirmations Guest Blogger: Patricia Eslava Vessey on Using Your Mind to Attract What You Want

A note from Deborah:

I’ve had the pleasure of knowing Patricia Eslava Vessey as a peer and coach for a number of years now and what can I say about her as the person she is? A petite and gentle power is this person I call friend and peer. A community builder with gentle presence, a spiritual seeker, a dancer, and to spend any amount of time with her is a tonic. And then there are my thoughts on the article she wrote that made me stop to immediately ask, could I share it? Gracious as she always is she said, why sure.  Pay special attention to the fact she is suggesting “practice” to gain mastery over time. I couldn’t agree more. Imagine it is Simple. And so IT is. And repeat this practice as long as it takes and combined with right action, what might you manifest. Enjoy!

Using Your Mind to Attract What You Want

”As we increasingly master our perceptions, beliefs, and thought/feeling patterns, we magnetically attract that which we most desire.”
~Luanne Oakes~

The mind is a powerful tool we can use to transform our lives.  With specific and purposeful use of the mind we can improve performance, relieve pain, speed healing, lose weight, stop smoking, achieve confidence, eliminate fears, stress and phobias, quit destructive habits and attract what we want in our lives.

There’s been a movement underfoot for awhile now, called the “Law of Attraction”.  It became popular with the 2006 movie, “The Secret” along with the promise to help you create anything you want in life.

What is it, and can I use it to attract what I want? According to Wikipedia, the law of attraction “refers to the idea that thoughts influence chance.” In other words the premise is that conscious and unconscious thoughts shape what happens in our life, not just motivation and action.

According to this theory we send out vibrations that represent our beliefs, thoughts and emotions.  The law of attraction matches those vibrations (whether positive or negative) and brings us more of the same.  So, based on this theory, to attract what you want you must become deliberate about what vibes you are sending out into the universe.

Many believe that to attract what you want, you merely have to send out the right vibrations and your desires will manifest.  Personally I don’t believe that sending out vibes alone will achieve my goals. However, I do know that our thoughts ultimately create the beliefs, feelings, actions and inactions in our lives. Our state of mind is the key in attracting what we want and achieving our goals.  When combined with sound action steps, we can substantially increase our odds at attracting what we desire.

What we focus on affects our performance. We know that in sports like golf, baseball, football and others once we learn the skills to play; we become truly success when we gain mastery of our thoughts.  Thoughts that are filled with anxiety about missing the mark or imagining failure will most often lead to failure.

This is true in all endeavors.  When we imagine and see ourselves succeeding at whatever goal we set it affects our performance by preparing our mind for how it’s going to be and we expect success. In sports for example, there are many documented studies comparing mental practice and actual physical practice. In many cases mentally practicing and rehearsing the game was equal to or better than physical practice.

If we think we’ve failed even though there maybe evidence to the contrary that is our experience.  On the other hand, if we walk through life imaging success, even if others don’t completely agree, we walk through life feeling successful.  When we feel successful, we take more risks increasing our opportunities for even more success.  Not only that, it feels good to think successful and positive thoughts about our lives.  How do you want to feel?

There are many ways we can use these ideas to create the success we desire.  One way is by participating in a guided meditation/visualization during which you will actively and creatively visualize successfully achieving our goal. You will prepare you mind for what will be by mentally rehearsing what you want to attract. You can also do this alone by visualizing, in as much detail as possible, what you want to attract in your life.

Learning to use our powerful minds in visualizing what we want to attract while taking action in the direction of our goals will support us in achieving the success we desire. What do you want to attract in your life today?

Care to experience the power of your mind?

How To Write Effective Affirmations

There is beauty in asking for what you want in the most vivid, spectacular and specific way you can express yourself. Then can the Universe provide your “custom order” with ease.  Gives new meaning to the concept of “made to order.”

Ever since this “project” we affectionately call “PDA” came to life a fortnight ago, I have not only spent a lot of time thinking about how to write affirmations, but I have spent considerable time studying the power affirmations around me all the time.

In every book, in songs, in dialogue overheard, in headlines, in the Facebook posts of friends, I see affirmations EVERYWHERE.

I recall the day I bought a brand new car: a metallic grey Jetta in 1991. That was the day I started noticing Jettas everywhere in closer proximity to me than previously noticed before. The abundance of Jettas was always there, I just was less tuned in before a Jetta became my vehicle of choice.

Where affirmations are concerned,  I am as tuned in to being aware of them– like never before. And I feel, I am more discerning of what is potent and what is less so. How could I not be, composing them everywhere I go these days for the subscribers to the daily email, the fans at the Facebook Page, the Twitter account and so on.

So a few thoughts on How To Write Effective Affirmations (and don’t take my words as gospel, take what you can use and leave the rest as you please.)

1. Begin from your heartspace and reflect on what you want in a particular area of your “life-at-large. ” When we lead from our heart, in my experience, we will manifest more quickly that which we authentically choose.

2. Imagine it is simple to write your heart’s desire in an affirmation. And again from this open and curious space, see what rises up or unfolds as wanting to be expressed.

3. Promise not to edit yourself the first time through. We edit ourselves so much more than we need to when in the company of others. There is no need to do so when you are alone, yes? If it is you alone writing out your bucket list then try a little stream of consciousness writing (aka a brain dump) to provide yourself a batch of raw ingredients to work with and refine. Forget the grammar, the spelling, the things we were drilled about all through elementary school.

Put another way: channel e.e. cummings for a change in what gets to come through. Let it all out. Let it all in. Let it have its say.

If you are feeling stuck, fill in the blanks of starter sentences like:

I create my perfect…

I attract …

I travel to…

I receive…

When once I allowed myself full creative license to ramble on about my heart’s desire– in the area of love and partnership, I generated a pretty long and specific list, full of vivid details. I then took that pure and enthusiastic writing to a crystallized form and arrived at a final piece that read in part like this:

I CHOOSE are that I am worthy of being loved/appreciated, I am good at making long-term work well, I am a committed partner despite all hardships, crises and and complications.

I am able to let my partner be himself and love him for who he is.

I am capable of and successful at deep, abiding loyalty. I am an amazing mother and friend and companion.

I cherish and value monogamy, commitment and devotion to our family.

I have a rich friendship as foundation for my marriage partnership.

Long-term contentment in partnership is achievable.

Marriage and family is a GREAT adventure I want and deserve.

Where else can one deeply delve into the conversation with one’s own heart as to what we want and how we want it? Why not do so in the areas of:

Your work and livelihood…

Your health and well-being…

Your long-term aspirations for your creative life…

This kind of activity for me is an on-going work in progress; that gets expressed in the present tense always. This keeps it vibrant for me.

To create affirmations in the present tense, in rich and specific language is going to work like a charm…for the power of the word is magical. The more intentional and vivid your vision, the greater the “nowness” of it, the more effective it will be for you.

And one last pair of tips:

1. Post that power affimation in places you will see and often.

2. Speak it daily to invoke the magic and power in the words and you will call it in to being that much sooner.

May your creativity express your heart’s desires with ease and confidence.

What wild and wonderful things I am creating with my unbridled enthusiasm and self-confidence! I am a creative force to be appreciated.

Power Affirmations: A Parenting Tool for Every Age

Consider This Bold Statement about consciously using Power Affirmations:

Affirmations as constructive tools (be they spoken, written, visual or a montage of all three) are capable of undoing negative conditioning,  we received directly and indirectly from birth and beyond.

Studies have shown that for every negative thing you say to a child, you must say four positive things just to keep the balance. When you realize how quick parents are to nitpick, to criticize, and how slow we are to praise, you realize over-praising is hardly a danger.” **

This quote started an article I found doing research on children and negative input, as one who is generating Positive Daily Affirmations for subscribers and loves doing so.  I remember a statement made in a college Psychology class, if memory serves, that 87% of what parents say to children is negative. This struck me. Baffled and shocked me. This statistic, remembered as it is, has stuck with me for over 25 years.

Conscious Parenting and  Power Affirmations

I remember thinking about my own childhood and the times that no, can’t, don’t and won’t peppered the conversations had with parents or dialogue overheard. Too much. Even for glass ¾ full me. It had its impact on me in my teens and 20s and 30s.

Alert and awake at 45 and raising an 11 year old who is “mostly” fearlessly self-expressed, I wonder how well I am striking the middle ground and not over-correcting for all the negative I overheard as a child. I’d say I am teaching and writing what I need ALWAYS to be integrating more deeply within my very core Self. How well do you honor your CORE needs by way of power affirmations or support?

We are ultimately programmed to understand negative from such a young age that we may spend our adult lives retraining ourselves. We get the opportunity to retrain ourselves only after we realize we are deep in a toxic well of negative conditioning, that we want to be free of if only for most of the time.

And even before I became a parent I vowed to “not” be a negative voice to my toddler. I vowed to speak as affirmatively as I could consciously manage, as much of the time, as possible. I vowed to use empowering and confidence and esteem building language in a supportive, nurturing tone. And my goal was that “no” would mean no, and get used when it truly needed to be said. I’m sure I say no more than I consciously realize, and happily, I am told by many I am a positive and reaffirming person to be around. Affirming and intentional language is always my end game though.

And I do affirm and commend myself for being grounded in being positive in my thinking and expression.  Can you and do you do the same? I hope you do.

How do you go about the world talking of yourself and others? Are you beating yourself up or commending yourself with gentle but enthusiastic belief in self and humbly so? Do you take a compliment well? Are you capable of saying thank you graciously?

Power affirmations as the tools they are, help us to transcend our default ways of being, thinking, feeling and sensing.  What would life be like if you didn’t assume you were going to encounter trouble and strife? What might life feel like if you presumed support was to be offered if you asked for it?

What if your partner, friend or employer was really simply listening to you express your needs and aspirations? And what if they didn’t throw cold water on you and your ideas but rather, they supported you with a “you can do it attitude?”

If you had your own internal self-belief and as a BONUS that of your partner, friend or employer WHAT might you speak up about and declare your intentions?

I’d like to suggest you try this simple and yes, challenging exercise for the next seven days.

Agree with yourself not to be critical or judgmental of others actions and words.  See how well you can manage it. And keep notes on the highlights. You will be so much more aware of your threshold for the negative, and how you sound to others as you listen to them talk to you. I invite you to try it, if only one day at a time…

There is a shift seeking to happen in you that becomes a part of who you are and how you are experienced. Power affirmations practiced daily (even a little) work likes keys to doors that have been locked for some time.  You are invited to consider what it is you really want then imagine yourself saying, “Yes, I get to have this!”

Can you employ positive affirmations too much? Absolutely not.  I invite you to create and declare affirmations for yourself  that reflect your heart’s desire as you determine what you really want and deserve. It’s your birthright to express your heart’s desires. Remember when you were two and wanted the cookie? Probably not, but as a parent who experiences  the determination of my daughter at 11, I know my choice to be consciously affirming of her requests (whether she got them all honored or not) has made all the difference. And it started with not always giving her the cookie, but not always telling her “no.”

Blessed be your inner journeys of acknowledging your best self in the coming week.

Imagine it is Simple. And so IT is.

The Power of Positive Thinking and Affirmations

Part One of many…

The Power of Positive Thinking

Your thoughts create a force. Can you buy in to the concept of the Power of Positive Thinking? Better still, will you adopt positive thinking intentionally as a daily practice? Would you consider making Positive Daily Affirmations part of your breakfast, lunch and dinner, as well as that morning cup of coffee? Could you try it for a week as a launch point?

Affirming thoughts galvanize a person and can prompt their Spirit into action. Actions can be inspired by elements both within us and beyond, in ways we imagine as possible and in ways far beyond what we can and do imagine. How big can you imagine a dream? When was the last time something you desired showed up and you recognized it? And did you seize the moment and accept the gift received?

Why not think the good thoughts more often? What purpose does critiquing ourselves truly serve.  Last time I checked in with my core Self, it wanted acknowledgement of what I was doing well, not another review of my last top ten list of mistakes made. Practicing positive affirmations and daily, helps us grow skillful at developing self-love, self-acceptance, and empowers us to create more of what we want.

Do you listen to that inner voice that tells you what it needs any given moment? Or have you turned the volume knob down so that you can’t hear the chorus saying, “we are ready for that great new…(life, love, state of health, career, vacation, opportunity).” How about turning the volume up so when intuitive guidance speaks clearly to us, we hear it?

The point is we are receiving messages all the time and the frequency we operate from either allows in clear messages or drowns them out with static. I want to hear the music and the messages within trying to be heard.

Have you ever opted to mindfully say no to harsh and negative self-judgment? For even a single day? What will it take for you to say yes to believing good outcomes can be manifest through the thoughts we lead with and declare most often?

This way of being and behaving is my personal philosophy for attracting the best life possible. It may not always happen on the schedule I set, but in time the lists of dreams I have determined become real for me, on a small or big scale. OR they feel so darn close.

The Power of Affirmations

The work of practicing Positive Daily Affirmations need not be difficult nor time consuming nor too lofty a pursuit. But, it is most effective when practiced consistently. So like brushing our teeth between meals, let us speak aloud affirmations that inspire us into supportive action. The power of positive thinking using affirmations is an elegant and easy way to shift your state of mind.

Why not keep it simple? Start by keeping it “local” in otherwords, keep it grounded in the moment where you are. I hear you thinking, “What do you mean?”

For example: if you are at work, feeling overwhelmed as you prep for a meeting that you really aren’t ready for START FROM WHERE YOU ARE and plan to do your best and show up on time, ready or not. Choose not to be late. That much you can give them. Try this alternative approach: 1. Do the best you can to be prepared and  2. Agree with your Self to be present and imagine it is simple to be in the flow of the meeting.

Why imagine the worst possible ending when if you arrived on time and relaxed, you might do a better job in the flow and without notes and polished slides to show. You might surprise yourself and your manager and the client.

Are you predominantly a positive person? Perhaps you are more neutral than negative? And if you are a negative Nelly, I am especially glad you are reading this post. The time to shift your fundamental way of thinking is this very moment. One day a time, one affirmation at a time, repeated as often as is helpful, and you are on your way.

Positive and daily affirmations will work their magic on you over time, if you will simply begin.

Imagine it is simple. And so IT is.
